Top 10 Must-See Beaches on St John
Discover the most breathtaking beaches on St John, from famous white sands to hidden gems.
One of the biggest draws of St John is its spectacular beaches. With two-thirds of the island protected as Virgin Islands National Park, you’ll find unspoiled stretches of sand, crystal-clear water, and incredible snorkeling just about everywhere. Whether you’re looking for lively spots with amenities or secluded coves, here are our top 10 must-see beaches on St John.
1. Trunk Bay
No list would be complete without Trunk Bay. Often called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, it features powdery white sand, turquoise water, and an underwater snorkeling trail right offshore. It’s part of the National Park and has facilities including bathrooms, showers, and a small snack bar. Heads up - you do have to pay a National Park fee to enter!
2. Cinnamon Bay
A favorite for both its beauty and space, Cinnamon Bay offers a wide beach, calm waters, and some of the best windsurfing and paddleboarding on the island. It also has bathrooms, a small shop, and picnic tables under the sea grape trees.
3. Hawksnest Bay
Close to Cruz Bay and easy to reach, Hawksnest is perfect if you’re short on time but still want postcard-worthy views. The water here is shallow and clear, ideal for swimming and snorkeling, especially along the right side.
4. Maho Bay
Famous for its resident sea turtles, Maho Bay has calm, shallow waters that make it ideal for families and beginner snorkelers. There are a few food trucks and beach rentals across the street, and plenty of shade if you get there early.
5. Salt Pond Bay
On the island’s south side, Salt Pond feels like a whole different world. A short hike brings you to this serene crescent beach with excellent snorkeling and far fewer crowds. It’s also the starting point for the hike to Drunk Bay, known for its quirky coral and shell sculptures.
6. Francis Bay
Neighbor to Maho, Francis Bay is a bit quieter and offers excellent birdwatching along its nearby trail. The water here is calm and the beach is long, making it easy to find a private spot to relax.
7. Jumbie Beach
If you love the idea of Trunk Bay but not the crowds, Jumbie is just a few minutes away and often much less busy. A short trail through the trees brings you to this intimate little beach - no facilities, just pure natural beauty.
8. Denis Bay
For a true off-the-beaten-path experience, hike the trail to reach Denis Bay. This secluded beach feels wonderfully wild, and you’ll often have it all to yourself.
9. Honeymoon Beach
Located on Caneel Bay, Honeymoon is accessible by hiking, boat, or golf cart service from Cruz Bay. You’ll find beach chairs, water sports rentals, and even a small bar, making it a great spot if you want some extra amenities.
10. Great Lameshur Bay
Another south shore treasure, Great Lameshur is remote, quiet, and has some of the best snorkeling on the island. The road can be bumpy, but adventurous travelers will be rewarded with solitude and pristine beauty.
