Living on St. John: What No One Tells You Before You Move

Living on St. John: What No One Tells You Before You Move

If you've visited St. John, you already know the feeling. The ferry pulls into Cruz Bay, the air smells like salt and possibility, and somewhere between your second Painkiller and your first sunset, you think: what if I just stayed?

Some people actually do. And life here is extraordinary. But it is also nothing like the vacation that sparked the idea. Before you start browsing listings, here is what you actually need to know.

The Ferry Is Your Lifeline (Treat It That Way)

There are no commercial flights directly to St. John. Every person, package, car, appliance, and bag of concrete arrives by boat. The passenger ferry from Red Hook on St. Thomas runs regularly and costs just a few dollars. The car barge is a different story. Getting your vehicle across requires planning, patience, and an acceptance that timelines are suggestions.

Most full-time residents keep a car on St. Thomas and a golf cart or small vehicle on St. John. Others go car-free entirely and make it work. Either way, logistics become a skill set you develop fast.

"Island Time" Is Real, and It Will Rewire You

The pace of life on St. John operates on its own frequency. Contractors run behind. Deliveries take longer than expected. The propane guy will get there when he gets there. In the beginning, this can feel maddening if you are used to mainland efficiency. Within a year, most people find it quietly liberating.

Patience is not just a virtue here. It is a survival strategy and, eventually, a genuine lifestyle shift that most islanders would not trade.

Everything Costs More Than You Think

St. John has no Costco, no Target, and no Amazon Prime next-day delivery. Nearly everything consumed on island is shipped in, and that cost gets passed along. Groceries, building materials, furniture, and appliances all carry a significant markup over mainland prices.

Many residents make strategic runs to St. Thomas or even Puerto Rico for big shopping trips. Others embrace a more minimalist approach by necessity. Budgeting for island life means padding every estimate by 20 to 30 percent and then padding it again.

The Community Is Unlike Anywhere Else

What St. John lacks in convenience, it more than makes up for in community. The island has a population of only a few thousand full-time residents, and that intimacy creates bonds that are hard to replicate elsewhere. Neighbors genuinely look out for each other. Local events, beach gatherings, and impromptu sundowner parties become the fabric of daily life.

New residents often say the community was the thing they did not expect, and the thing they end up valuing most.

Hurricane Season Is Something You Plan For, Not Around

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk from August through October. Long-term residents do not live in fear of it, but they do live with a healthy respect for it. That means storm shutters, a generator, water storage, and a plan.

After Hurricane Irma in 2017, St. John rebuilt with remarkable resilience. The island that exists today is stronger, smarter, and more prepared than ever. But understanding the season and preparing accordingly is simply part of life in the Caribbean.

The Tradeoffs Are Very Much Worth It

No traffic jams. No gray winters. No disconnected neighbors who have lived next door for a decade and never learned your name. In exchange for some logistical complexity and higher costs, you get a life that looks like most people's fantasy.

Waking up to turquoise water. Hiking through National Park land before breakfast. Knowing the bartender, the fisherman, the yoga instructor, and the real estate broker by first name.

People who move to St. John rarely leave by choice. That tells you everything.
