How to Get to St John: Ferries, Flights, and Logistics

One of the most common questions we hear at Cruz Bay Realty is: “How do I actually get to St John?”

Our little slice of paradise is just 20 square miles, with no airport and no cruise ship dock - and that’s part of what keeps it so special. But getting here is easier than you might think once you know the steps. Here’s everything you need to know about flights, ferries, and travel logistics to help you plan a smooth journey to St John, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Step 1: Fly Into St Thomas

Since there’s no airport on St John, you’ll first fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on neighboring St Thomas.

  • STT has direct flights from many U.S. cities, including Miami, Atlanta, New York, Charlotte, Dallas, and more.

  • Major airlines like American, Delta, United, Spirit, and JetBlue service St. Thomas year-round.

  • If coming from outside the U.S., you’ll likely connect through San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Tip: Try to arrive earlier in the day if possible — it gives you more ferry options and a more relaxed transfer to St. John.

Step 2: Taxi to the Ferry Dock

From the airport, you’ll take a taxi to one of the ferry docks. There are two main options:

1. Red Hook Ferry

  • Located on the east end of St Thomas, about a 45-minute taxi ride from the airport.

  • Ferries depart every hour (on the hour) from early morning until around midnight.

  • The ride from Red Hook to Cruz Bay on St. John takes about 15–20 minutes.

2. Charlotte Amalie Ferry

  • Closer to the airport (about a 10-15 minute taxi ride), but with fewer departure times.

  • The ferry ride is longer, about 45 minutes to Cruz Bay.

  • This option is less common but can work if the timing aligns with your flight.

Taxis are plentiful at the airport and charge set rates per person. Drivers are friendly and happy to help with luggage.

Step 3: The Ferry to St John

Once you’re at the ferry dock, simply buy a ticket at the window and wait for the next boat. Tickets for the Red Hook–Cruz Bay route are about $8–10 per person each way, plus a small fee for luggage. You can always purchase them online, ahead of time.

The ferries are open-air, scenic, and a great way to begin your island experience. Keep your camera handy for views of the turquoise waters and lush hills!

What About Rental Cars?

If you’re planning to rent a car during your stay on St John, we recommend renting it on St John rather than St Thomas. This way, you avoid the added hassle (and expense) of taking a car barge across the channel.

However, if you do rent on St Thomas, you’ll need to take a car ferry (barge) from Red Hook to St John. Car barges run throughout the day but less frequently than passenger ferries, so plan ahead.

Pro Tips for Smooth Travel

✅ Book your flights and accommodations early. St John is a sought-after destination.
✅ Pack light if you can; the island vibe is casual, and luggage fees on the ferries can add up.
✅ Bring cash for taxis and ferry tickets. While some accept cards, it’s not guaranteed.
✅ Allow some buffer time if you’re arriving late in the day or if your flight is delayed.
